Travis Souza. I was born in California now living in Glasgow, Scotland. The idea for this project came as a result of hearing the news that the High Speed rail line would require land that has belonged to my family for over 100 years. I grew up around famers and agriculture, but like so many of my generation I was somehow presuaded through my education that all that is important, interesting and sophisticated required me to leave for a city. The project seemed a good way of trying to come to terms with my own connections to and affections for two very different ways of life. As the rail presents both a benefit and a threat to a variety of individuals and practices I thought that this project, by being considered a type of qualitative research, could perhaps provide a service to the High Speed Rail Authority, those who are effected, and others who are as daunted as I am by the complexity of issues it raises in basic terms of shared land, culture, work, and leisure.
My brother Adam Souza is a freelance video producer and editor and my brother Everett Nate Yockeyis a producer and Director of Photography for a video production company. Both of them, like myself, have moved on from our hometown and are now living and working in Portland, Oregon.
